DMPS (Dimercaptopropane
Sulfonate or 2,3-Dimercaptopropane Sulfonic Acid) is a sulfur-based,
water-soluble chemical chelation agent. DMPS has been used for decades in
Europe as a treatment for heavy metal intoxication and although primarily
used as a chelator for mercury toxicity, it seems to have an affinity for
pulling out various other metals (both harmful and helpful) as well.
Available as a finished drug in Europe, DMPS is only available in the United
States as a bulk chemical to be compounded by a pharmacist when (and only
when) prescribed by a physician. Due to safety concerns and other risk
factors, DMPS has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) and as such is still being researched and tested.
